What is an eating disorder?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health:

“Eating disorders are serious illnesses marked by severe disturbances in a person’s eating behaviors. Although many people may be concerned about their health, weight, or appearance on occasion, some become fixated or obsessed with weight loss, body weight or shape, and controlling their food intake. These may be signs of an eating disorder.”

Eating Disorders do not discriminate. Eating Disorders do not only happen to a certain type of person, or ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Numerous external and internal factors can impact an individual’s likelihood of developing an Eating Disorder (genetics, biological, psychological, social factors, etc.)

For more information, visit: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/sites/default/files/documents/health/publications/eating-disorders/eating-disorders-what-you-need-to-know.pdf

Psychotherapy, in combination with other treatment providers such as dieticians, medical monitoring, medication management, and/or higher levels of care, can be an effective method for treating eating disorders.
